James Isaak: Songs

Wasting Time

(James Isaak)
In an old decrepid cabin down a road I long forgot
lived an artist with his easel painting pictures with his heart
the coffee pots are cracked and dusty memories on the floor
along with proverbs from the bible etched in stone upon the door
and with every stroke he made he tried to paint a better world
but the colors cracked and faded fell to dust upon the floor
yet still he soldiered on and never noticed where he was
he saw past the distractions plastered all along the walls
people told him he was crazy he was only wasting time
making pictures noone cared for while his life was passing by
why do you try, why do you try
because I can, was his reply
why do you try, why do you try
because I can see them, and its not a waste of time

There was a woman in a matchbox house with no money and no pride
all her children were enslaved and long ago her husband died
so she carved a man made out of wood and sat him by her side
all day and night she spoke to him but there was no reply
yet still she told him stories about happier times
when family was together and the laughter hadnt died
and the man just sat and smiled and never once gave her a sign
of any life inside those hard dark wooden eyes
people told her she was crazy, she was only wasting time
telling stories noone listened to while her life was passing by
why do you try, why do you try
because I can, was her reply
why do you try, why do you try
because I feel comfort, and its not a waste of time

There was a man who made his fortune out of misery and pain
he stepped on who he had to so that he could stake his claim
he sat inside his mansion with his riches and his fame
and his ambitions burning brightly swirled around him like a flame
he bought and sold the world a thousand times before he died
and lying broken on his bed he called his servents to his side
he had them pack all of his riches and place them in his grave
so he could buy his way to heaven and his soul would be saved
they told him he was crazy, he was only wasting time
if you want to go to heaven why didn’t you live a better life
why do you try, why do you try
because I can, was his reply
why do you try, why do you try
The face of god is in a dollar
and its not a waste of time
