James Isaak: Songs
Nancy's Song
(James Isaak)
Way down south by the river blue
I took my final leave of you
you cried some tears and then you said goodbye
we walked along the current strong
I jumped in the river to save my soul
and the water washed away my weary cry
Then a fisherman caught me on his pole
he dangled me from his hook and he stole
my boots from off my feet then he threw me back
and then a mean old trout he took my coat
and he left me on the side of the road
with nothin but my bare feet and a sack
I walked along for fifty miles
until a straight dressed man with a crooked smile
drove up in a brand new shiny cadillac
he said hed help me on my feet
the only price I’d have to meet
would leave most of my humanity intact
I said “thank you no, but I’d rather go
find another road to get back home”
and he gnashed his teeth and horns grew from his head
“The only way that you’ll succeed
is to take your cues from me!” he screamed
his eyes ablaze his face a fiery red
Well I ran so hard my face turned blue
I couldn’t think of nothin else to do
‘til finally I couldn’t run no more
I stopped to take a look around
and see what fortunes I had found
too tired to really care what was in store
Then I realized I’d come back home
my soul was wearied to the bone
but lightened with each step I took toward you
and then I saw you standing there
the moonlight dancing in your hair
you took me in you arms and I felt new...
